Response of the religious, conservative middle classes to the deterioration of democracy in Turkey

Project description

The research project explores the growing dissatisfaction with the current state of the AKP and its leadership policy, and will track discussions about the failures of and alternatives to present AKP policy.

Short biography

Günter Seufert is a senior researcher with the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) in Berlin, where he focuses on political developments in Turkey and the Cyprus conflict. He also taught as a visiting associate professor in the Department for Turkish and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Cyprus in Nicosia (2004-2007). Prior to this he was a researcher and the managing director of the Istanbul branch of the Orient-Institut Beirut of the German Oriental Society (1996-2001). Seufert, who holds a PhD in sociology, was a postdoc researcher at the University of Lausanne in 1996.
