What can the EU do in the face of politicised justice, human rights violations and disregard for basic principles of the rule of law in Turkey today? What actions might make a difference? The European Stability Initiative (ESI) analyzes the EU-Turkey accession process. The paper argues that hardly anybody defends it, and the best argument in its favour appears to be that breaking it off would not help either, and might make things worse for both sides and for human rights in Turkey.
