Despite ongoing enhancements to our security measures, hackers have managed to penetrate the IT systems of Stiftung Mercator and compromise certain data. The police are already investigating. The full extent of the damage is currently unknown. The foundation remains operational despite some current limitations.
Using a previously unknown security vulnerability, anonymous hackers gained access to Stiftung Mercator’s files over the Christmas holidays. The possibility that information regarding project and business partners, as well as other third parties, may have been accessed, cannot be ruled out at this point. Additionally, several internal applications are currently non-functional. “We are dismayed by this insidious cyberattack and must accept that despite intensive efforts to enhance our security systems in recent years, there is no absolute protection against such assaults,” explains Dr. Wolfgang Rohe, Chairman of the Executive Board of the non-profit Stiftung Mercator.
The Essen Criminal Police have launched an investigation. External IT experts are assisting the foundation in systematically restoring the programs to full functionality. “We are optimistic that we will be able to resume regular operations soon and thus limit the damage caused,” assures Dr. Markus Piduhn, Commercial Director of Stiftung Mercator.
The foundation can be reached without restriction via the main phone number +49 201-24522-0 and by email.
