Dr Magdalena Kirchner, Director of the Europe in the World Centre at Stiftung Mercator, has decided to pursue a new professional direction for personal reasons. Dr Christian Straube, previously a project manager in the centre, has taken over her responsibilities on an interim basis.
“Working in a challenging international environment, Magdalena Kirchner has played a key role in further developing the strategic direction of our Europe in the World programme portfolio. Her achievements include strengthening multilateral approaches to addressing global challenges, shaping and expanding our partnerships across Europe, and enhancing the resilience of European democracies and societies,” says Dr Lars Grotewold, Chief Executive Officer of Stiftung Mercator. “We are sincerely grateful for her dedication and contributions and wish her every success in the future.”
Dr Kirchner’s departure is taking place on the best of terms and at her own request. She has headed the Europe in the World Centre since 1 January 2024 and will leave the organization at the end of her parental leave in April 2027.
Dr Christian Straube, who holds a doctorate in Ethnology and Sinology, has been with Stiftung Mercator since 1 November 2022. He will lead the division on an interim basis until a successor has been appointed.
