Short biography

As a Mercator fellow, Julian Allan Watkinson analyzes the implications of China’s rise as the “sponsor” of the Global South for the geopolitical influence of Western nations. After his German-Chinese double degree bachelor in International Economics and Business, he obtained his master’s degree with a focus on Development Economics at the University of Groningen. In addition to his research in the field of Chinese development assistance, Julian founded the NGO insectus, which combats local hidden hunger by implementing insect farms in Zambia and Togo. Prior to his Mercator Fellowship, Julian worked as a strategy consultant in the private sector and a young professional in the finance sector.
