Short biography

Sophie Etzold studied Arabic Studies, Ethnology and Religious Studies in Leipzig, with a special focus on the Middle East and North Africa. Since 2005, through intense stays and semesters abroad, she gained deep insight into the language, culture and the working environment of several Muslim countries, especially in Arabia. She especially focuses on refugee and migration research, crisis regions, and gender-related violence. During her studies she expanded her expertise while working with Iraqi refugees in Syria at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, where she also works now.
