A 52 (both directions):
Exit 27/28: Essen/Rüttenscheid
Drive along the slip road to Alfredstrasse, then follow Alfredstrasse (B 224) for approx. 3 km towards Essen-Zentrum. The last 700 m of Alfredstrasse are Bismarckstrasse. At the Bismarckstrasse/Kruppstrasse intersection, turn right into Kruppstrasse. Important: drive straight ahead past the two-lane approach road to the A 40 and turn right at the next crossroads into Huyssenallee.You will see Stiftung Mercator on the right hand side after around 250 m. To park outside the foundation, turn right into Baedekerstrasse and then immediately left into the road which runs parallel to the four-lane Huyssenallee.
A 40 (to Duisburg):
Exit 23: Essen Zentrum
Continue on the slip road up to the traffic lights. After the traffic lights, get into the far left hand lane on Kruppstrasse and make a U-turn. Important: drive straight ahead past the two-lane approach road to the A 40 and turn right at the next crossroads into Huyssenallee. You will see Stiftung Mercator on the right hand side after around 250 m. To park outside the foundation, turn right into Baedekerstrasse and then immediately left into the road which runs parallel to the four-lane Huyssenallee.
A 40 (to Dortmund):
Exit 28: Essen Zentrum
Continue on the slip road up to Holsterhauser Strasse. Drive straight ahead at the traffic lights. After around 50 m, Holsterhauser Strasse runs into Kruppstrasse. Drive across two major intersections and then turn right at the third crossroads into Huyssenallee after around 750 m. You will see Stiftung Mercator on the right hand side after around 250 m. To park outside the foundation, turn right into Baedekerstrasse and then immediately left into the road which runs parallel to the four-lane Huyssenallee.
TIP: Stiftung Mercator is directly opposite the Saalbau building and the Philharmonic Hall, so you can also follow the signs to “Saalbau” or “Philharmonie”. If there are no parking spaces outside Stiftung Mercator, you can also park in the “Saalbau” or “Philharmonie” car parks.
By public transport:
Stiftung Mercator is only a few minutes’ walk from Essen Central Station. Huyssenallee is to the south of the central station (i.e. in the opposite direction to the city centre). To get there, cross over Kruppstrasse and you will find Stiftung Mercator approx 250 m further down the road on the right hand side.
You can also take underground rail (U-Bahn) line U11 or tram lines 101 or 107 to the “Philharmonie/Saalbau” stop.
By plane:
Düsseldorf International Airport Düsseldorf airport is around 20 minutes by car from Stiftung Mercator. Taxis are available at the airport to take you there via the A 44/A 52 motorways. At the “Düsseldorf Airport” rail station you have a choice of four InterCity Express services (10, 40, 41 and 45), three regional express services (RE 1, 6 and 11) and the S-Bahn metro service (S 1). They all take you to Essen Central Station in approximately 25 minutes.
