Unser Motto

Die Stiftung Mercator tritt ein für ein geeintes, friedliches Europa – besonders in Zeiten, in denen das Selbstbestimmungsrecht der Völker und die Menschenrechte mit großer Brutalität verletzt werden. Die Ausweitung von Russlands Angriffskrieg auf die gesamte Ukraine fordert uns alle heraus und stellt einen Angriff auf die europäische Sicherheitsarchitektur und die Demokratie als solche dar. 

Dadurch ist die Basis unseres gesellschaftlichen Zusammenlebens in Gefahr. Denn die Demokratie wird aus vielen Richtungen attackiert. Zusätzlich treibt die anhaltende wirtschaftliche Stagnation die soziale Spaltung voran, Desinformation und Vertrauensverlust in die Politik begünstigen eine zunehmende Polarisierung der Gesellschaft, extremistische Strömungen erstarken – und über allem steht die globale Bedrohung durch die Klimakrise. 

In Anbetracht der vielfältigen Krisen dieser Zeit treten wir als europäische Stiftung mit besonderer Entschlossenheit für demokratische Werte ein. Wir fördern die Verständigung zwischen Menschen unterschiedlicher Kulturen, wir setzen uns für gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt ein, kurz: 

#WirstärkenDemokratie.​

Vom 14.-21. August 2026 findet der meet!-Moment für die 20 Teilnehmenden in Warschau statt. Der 8. meet!-Jahrgang wird während des meet!-Moment die Gelegenheit haben mit Expert*innen der internationalen Zusammenarbeit und lokalen Akteur*innen in das Gespräch zu kommen sowie mehr über Politik, Gesellschaft und Kultur Polens zu erfahren.

Digital Mercator Talk: Europe’s Path on AI - Identifying Common Ground for Action

AI is moving faster than Europe. Starting conditions here differ sharply from those in the US and China, which raises an urgent question: What would it take for Europe to thrive and retain agency? And can a European path be built without relying on US hyperscalers? 

Opinions diverge sharply here, not least in the debate sparked by the Europe 2031 scenario. Assuming a frontier AI-led future, it proposed more investment, more computing power, and, under certain conditions, partnerships with American providers. 

Critics have pointed out false premises and unfavorable trade-offs: rising energy consumption, weakening of worker and environmental protections, and dependence on Big Tech for critical infrastructure. 

This debate points to a broader question that is not just about speed but also direction: What would a distinctly European AI strategy look like if competitiveness, democratic resilience and public value were treated as mutually reinforcing goals rather than competing priorities?

We would like to invite you to discuss these issues with Philip Fox, co-author of the Europe 2031 scenario, and Max von Thun, Director of Open Markets Europe. In our Mercator Talk we aim to explore common ground between different visions and the strategic choices that need to be taken. The discussion will be moderated by Carla Hustedt, Director Centre for Digital Society, Stiftung Mercator.

Every summer, the European Forum Alpbach brings together people who are shaping ideas, policies, and initiatives across Europe and beyond. Alongside the Forum, one tradition has become an integral part of the Mercator Globe experience: coming together as a community at our "Mercator Globe Connects: Alpbach Edition".

Take a break from the Forum's busy programme and join us for an evening in the welcoming atmosphere of a traditional Tyrolean Stube. Over regional cuisine and local hospitality, we'll reconnect with familiar faces, welcome new members of the community, and enjoy the conversations that often become the most memorable part of Alpbach.
