schule@museum

schule@museum is a Germany-wide cooperation project designed to get schools and museums to join forces with the aim to getting children and young people interested in museums and encouraging them to take a productive and creative approach to our cultural and artistic heritage.

Structure and organization

Schools and museums all over Germany are invited to develop, in a dialogue with one another, sustainable forms of cooperation and concepts for the successful cultural education of children and young people. Museums and secondary schools of all types are the target group, especially those with students from non-academic families and from families of migrant origin. There is a particular focus on lower secondary schools, comprehensive schools and schools in socially disadvantaged areas. From the submitted concepts, an independent jury has selected a number of school/museum partnerships. 15 school and museum tandems have been putting their cooperation to the test since 2009. The partnerships are given the opportunity to undertake an intercultural project during which the structures for successful cooperation which they have jointly developed with expert support can be applied in practice over a longer period. The cooperation lasts an entire year and is accompanied by workshops and coaching; the results are documented and evaluated.

Objectives

The project’s objective is for pupils to take full advantage of museums as a place where they can pursue learning outside the school environment and to firmly establish the subject of cultural education in school curricula. Interlinking schools and museums is intended to pave the way for the upcoming generation to access cultural institutions and focus greater attention on the cultural education mandate of museums.
