jamtruck
The jamtruck is a multi-coloured band rehearsal room on wheels. According to its motto "Make your Music", it offers musically inexperienced young people the opportunity to connect with music and thus discover their own creative potential.
Structure and Organization
The jamtruck has a rehearsal room, musical instruments and a sound studio. In the 2008/2009 school year, it started setting out on a seven-year tour of schools and youth centres in Essen. It is visiting a different district of Essen on each day of the school week. Five to six young people aged between 10 and 18 have the opportunity to spend up to one year rehearsing as a band in the truck. Two of the musicians and music teachers in the five-man jamtruck team work with the children at any one time, teaching them the basics of playing in a band and then helping them to write the music and lyrics for their own song. In addition to the annual jamtruck festival, an event is planned in cooperation with the Culture Capital of Europe RUHR.2010.
Objectives
The project is designed to reach young individuals in the environments where they live and spend their spare time, whatever their social or cultural background. It is therefore also geared to a group of people who, until now, have hardly taken advantage of municipal music school programmes. The objective of the work in the jamtruck is to expose young people to (music) culture as a means of boosting their self-confidence, concentration skills and creativity and of improving their social skills. In the jamtruck, young people from different cultural backgrounds all pursue the same goal, which encourages a collective identity and cohesion.
