Smart Energy for Europe Platform (SEFEP)

Stiftung Mercator and the European Climate Foundation (ECF) have joined forces to create the Smart Energy for Europe Platform (SEFEP). SEFEP shall
become a leading resource supporting the formulation and advocacy of policies that can drive renewable energy-based low-carbon prosperity and energy security for Europe.

Structure and Organization
SEFEP is a not-for-profit Ltd. based in Berlin (Mohrenstraße 59, 10117 Berlin). SEFEP will act as a grant-making organization working toward achieving policy outcomes through its support for established civil society actors, either directly or through multi-stakeholder initiatives assembled for specific purposes. SEFEP will also fund research projects to fill in knowledge gaps. In addition to the direct grant-making activity, SEFEP will establish forums such as policy workshops and small, high-level conferences in which leading thinking and research around the central ideas of low-carbon prosperity and energy security can be advanced through dialogue among a wide range of key stakeholders.
Objectives
The overarching objective of SEFEP will be to ensure the transition to a fully de-carbonized, fully reliable, fully secure power supply in Europe before 2050. SEFEP’s specific focus will be on the role that renewable sources will play in driving that transition, with a founding principle that deriving at least 70% of all electricity supply from renewable sources by 2035 is not only achievable but is the most certain pathway to reaching Europe’s 2050 climate and energy security objectives.
