51° 1/2009: Asia

The second issue of 51° is all about Asia, providing you with an impression of what life is like there.

Three Stiftung Mercator scholarship holders, a journalist and two school students, report on the time they spent in Vietnam, China and Turkey, and what they experienced there. Dr Tanja Köhler, a journalist who works for broadcasters WDR and SWR, spent eight weeks touring Vietnam, conducting research into environmental protection and the textile industry. Jennifer Hecht, a high-school student from the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, is spending an entire school year in Turkey, and already speaks fluent Turkish. Nicholas Hoose, another student from a school in North Rhine-Westphalia, is likewise spending a year abroad, and talks about his experiences in Nanjing.

In addition, Dr Theo Sommer, editor-at-large at German weekly DIE ZEIT, writes about the first Mercator Lecture, education researcher Dr Klaus Klemm talks about the evaluation of the “Special tuition” provided by Stiftung Mercator, and RUHR.2010 and Stiftung Mercator present their joint programme.
